The iSA Project team formed by medical, technical and administrative personnel of St. John of God, Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona and Son Dureta hospitals.
Between the days 27th and 29th of October 2009 the Saint John of God Hospital of Sierra Leone hosted the first meeting between representatives of this hospital and the iSA Project coordination team composed of medical and technical personnel of Son Dureta and Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona.
The visit was centered on explaining the mission and vision of the iSA Project with special emphasis on the healthcare and educational benefits that can be achieved through the use of a Web platform that will facilitate the exchange of medical knowledge around cases of difficult diagnosis.
One of the most important advances of the meeting was the definition of a medical team of St. John of God that will be in charge of managing the cases to be uploaded to the iSA Web Platform. At the same time, the hospital will assign personnel for technological issues.
Another important objective of the project will be the utilization of the iSA Web Platform as multimedia knowledge repository for the constant training of doctors and nurses in the rooms of the medical school near the hospital. This knowledge repository will be enriched with real medical cases provided by all the hospitals of the iSA Project located in other countries such as Kenya, Equatorial Guinea, Peru, Mexico and Spain. This educational material, based on the clinical case, shall be complemented with various digital contents such as presentations or guides for the school of nursing.
Concerning telecommunication resources, the St. John of God hospital currently has a satellite connection that creates a high-speed Wi-Fi wireless network adequate for interconsultations and Web navigation. Nevertheless, the project will require the setup of an additional connection point in the school building with the aim of providing Internet access in the learning rooms.
About St. John of God Catholic Hospital
St. John of God is a general hospital located in Mabesseneh, a village 2 Km away from the city of Lunsar in Sierra Leone. The hospital was funded in 1967 by the Orden de Hermanos de San Juan de Dios and nowadays acts as hospital of reference in the country offering internal medicine, general surgery, pediatrics and maternity services. Since July 2005, the hospital develops a twinning program with Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona focused on educational support and the improvement of nursing and pediatric services.
