Infectious diseases team

Son Espases University Hospital and CMF Health Ministries of Kenya continue developing collaboration activities oriented to the training of medical personnel within the iSA Project context. During the first semester of 2011 CMF’s Clinical Officer Leonard Loontaye had the opportunity to complete a training period in Son Espases, specifically in infectious diseases, microbiology and adult oncology.

Clinical session to discuss cases

During his training period in infectious diseases Leonard got familiar with the outpatient care services and gained experience in ward monitoring and medical data management. He also participated weekly in the clinical sessions of the service in which clinical cases of special interest are jointly discussed. With the microbiology team the work was focused on the basics of culture techniques, mycology and staining techniques. Finally, the training included a stay with the medical oncology service. The main topics in oncoloy were outpatient clinic services, chemotherapy administration, monitoring and follow-up and the management of patients in multidisciplinary musculo-skeletal tumor committees.

Leonard Loontaye belongs to the clinical team of CMF Maasai Health Ministries. CMF started with a single bush clinic in Maasailand in the early 80s. From there it has grown to six permanent medical clinics, two large health centres as well as mobile immunization clinics. There are rapidly expanding HIV/AIDS clinics and a health education programme in the rural areas. The clinics are overseen on a daily basis by John Sankok, the primary Maasai administrator. Over 40,000 different patients each year are seen at the clinics, treating a variety of illnesses, including malaria, brucellosis, typhoid fever, and an array of tropical diseases.
